#Katrina10: How Trust Faith & Grace Got Us Out of New Orleans in The Knick of Time

Blessings y’all! It’s Friday, August 28th 2015 and I’ve been thinking a lot about my Katrina story from 10 years ago. Rewind 22 years ago. I was a misift, rebel who ended up in a heap of trouble when I was 16. As a result I was sent to live in a rural town outside of Lafayette Louisiana for ten months. Desipte, living in Louisiana for just about a year, I never had a chance to visit or spend any time in New Orleans. It was eleven years later, and I was hired as the tour manager for a Reggae group called the “Easy Star All-Stars.” One of our stops was New Orleans!! We were playing the House of Blues on a Friday night, but not just any Friday night. It was the Friday of the weekend that Katrina was barreling towards the gulf coast, and by the time I arrived in New Orleans I had no idea what we were in for. Our show that night at the House of Blues was amazing, and I remember being so excited that we had the weekend off in NOLA!! I would finally get a chance to experience this mystical, wild, magical city. Then the calls started coming in…. A man I was seeing … Continue reading

Little $ BIG Impact – The Power of Community

You may not know this about me, but I’ve long had a dream of being a philanthropist. I used think that I’d need millions of dollars to make an impact, thankful now I know differently. Over the last several years I’ve supported projects with as little as $1, and guess what…. those $1, $5, $25 donations made an impact and helped projects get funded. I am continuously awed and blessed by the power of our community! We are greater together, and the impact we make can move mountains…AND EXPAND SCHOOLS!! As many of you know, I’ve been passionate about Africa, African culture and playing a role in increasing the peace and goodness on the continent of Africa. I started traveling to Africa 5 years ago and have been aching to pay it forward to organizations and projects that are making a direct impact on the lives of Africans in the Motherland. So I’ve been invited to join 29 other change-makers, entrepreneurs and colleagues in the Misfit Inc. community to raise $500 each between now and the end of August to improve a school for children in Uganda! The “Send Me to School” program doesn’t just build buildings (although with 190 … Continue reading

Focus & Contentment ~ My New Huffington Post Blog!

In 2015, I’m choosing to focus on one thing at a time, let go of what’s no longer energizing me, and be more present in the here and the now.  This means embracing the present moment, and focusing on what is truly important and giving energy to my life! I talk about this in my latest blog for the Huffington Post entitled “Focus, Contentment, and How I’m Choosing to Be Here Now.” Letting go and learning to focus on one thing at a time can be a challenging, life-long journey. Believe me, I know this first hand, and I trust sharing my experiences will empower you to share yours. Do you struggle with focus or contentment?  Has something specific helped you remain present and “in the moment?” I would love to hear your thoughts! Share them in the comments section below. And if you missed them, here are my past Huffington Post blogs where I talk about kicking resistance in the ass and finding the power to keep going in 2014. Give thanks for all of your support and for sharing this amazing journey with me! I look forward to reading and responding to your comments 🙂 Blessings, … Continue reading

Because of my own fears and lack of confidence, self love and self esteem, I pigeon holed myself on the ‘business end’ of entertainment to avoid having to take to the stage myself. For YEARS I struggled with major internal conflict, until I couldn’t ignore the whispers of my soul any longer! Over the last 8 years I’ve chosen to get out of my own way and PRIORITIZE these creative dreams and projects that had been stirring in my soul since I was a child. What’s happened as a result is that I feel more empowered and fulfilled in my … Continue reading

Laura Aiisha’s NEW SONG ‘You See Me’ available now!!

The songwriting process never ceases to amaze me. I hear music, or receive words to a melody that channels through my being, out of my mouth and into the world. I notice that there is a mixture of emotions, thoughts and stories that come up. Part of me feels so excited, that I know this is something powerful and special. Then another part of me starts to feel scared, will people get it? Like it? Criticize me?! Will I be able to put what I’m hearing in my heart and mind down on paper and audio the way I hear it within?! So many questions.. to many opportunities to say fuck it. I’m not doing this. But what fun is that?! Can you imagine if, when any of the great artists, creators and inventors in our world were to allow their fear, their insecurities or stories about being enough, being loved and accepted etc., the fear of it being too much work, stop them from creating?! Imagine the great works of art, the great inventions we might have never known. Ooooo… make me shiver just thinking about it! So here I was… presented with a musical idea from a dear … Continue reading

Focus, Contentment and How I’m Choosing to Be Here Now

I’ve had this reminder in my calendar since doing Marie Forleo’s B School a few years ago. It pops up on Saturday mornings and reminds me to let go of what’s no longer feeling juicy. I see this reminder often, but usually ignore it or skirt over it saying to myself, ‘What’s not feeling juicy?! I can’t even think about that right now,’ or ‘Everything in my life is feeling juicy!’ When I think of this I chuckle and hear a little… ‘yea right’ in my heart. Here’s the thing. I’ve been an overachiever all my life. Always trying to be the best, always trying to do several things at once partly because I’m super crazy creative and have so many ideas and so much energy channeling through me, and partly because I’m trying to ‘get somewhere.’ Always thinking of the end result, and unwilling or unable to be fully content with the present. This is not news to me. My first life coach Julie Cramer used to say to me 8 years ago, ‘What would it be like to just be content with where you are? No striving for something better or to be better?! This message has stuck … Continue reading
