Empowering the next generation of girls – one classroom at a time!

I am so thrilled to be able to share a project with you that has been over a year in the making!

Helping young women step into their power and embrace their unique gifts is a passion and mission of mine! This past school year, my twin sister Sarah and I collaborated on a pilot project with the staff and students of Nativity Miguel’s St. Monica’s Campus to share in a year-long Empowerment and Leadership program with their grade 7 girls.

This project is near and dear to both our hearts as we both keenly remember that vital time in our childhood. 7th grade was the time that I started to veer down a different path and venture into unknown territory, and somewhat unhealthy behavior. I had a hard time relating to my parents, people at school, and sometimes even my twin sister. It was a time when I could have used extra support, guidance, mentorship and a sense that even though I was exploring things that a lot of my peers weren’t exploring, that that was ok, that I was ok.

Sarah and I developed a program to give Saint Monica’s 7th grade girls the tools and space to discover who they are while receiving the support they need to become powerful and empowered young women. We taught mindfulness practices, body-centered awareness, verbalization and communication tools, journal writing, how to express yourself in healthy ways through movement and visual art forms, and several simple, but powerful tools they can carry with them into the world as they claim their power and chart their own journey and path!

We also worked with the 7th Grade girls’ teachers during a handful of workshops throughout the school year so that the work that we were doing with the girls could be experienced by the teachers themselves. It was a powerful year for all of us! And truly amazing to watch the girls and teachers open up and transform before our eyes.

Here is a short piece about our work with the 7th Grade girls and Teachers at Saint Monica’s. Sarah and I continue exploring different ways of bringing this to more schools and classrooms around the country and the world! If you are touched or inspired, please leave a comment and share this blog 🙂

Sarah and I work with both adult and youth. For more info on how to bring Sarah and I to your school, community center, or organization, please contact Sarah Haykel at sarah@sarahhaykel.com

Drowning in boring? Get ready to Ignite… your love life!

Every day is an opportunity to love and be loved, however there is something that feels extra special about February. Not only is it the shortest month in all the year (and a leap year this year.. how cool!!), but it also means that spring is ever closer to warming our souls and uplifting our senses with the rebirth of everything (at least in the northern hemisphere)! Can I get a Woo Woo?!! Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with two powerhouse execs in Buffalo, NY, who have a podcast for women, by women. Julia and Anne are a frickin’ hoot and I was thrilled to sit down with them for their Valentine’s day episode and get jiggy talking about relational intimacy on the Snyder on Call Podcast! Click here to check out their Facebook page and share your support! I’m passionate and curious about the variety of intimate relationships that exist in our world, what makes them wax and wane or last through the ages, and was thrilled to receive an invitation to dive into the topic on how to “reignite” love and intimacy in long-term romantic partnerships with Julia and Anne. What a timely topic in this season … Continue reading

Are you listening to the song of your Soul? Update on my Digital Pause

I realize I’ve been out of touch for quite a while. I’ve been thinking about my community (YOU!), holding you in my heart, planning to reach out, and….. I’ve been putting it off. Here’s an update from my last blog of 2015….. As you may have read, something really big was beginning to shift within me late summer/early fall 2015. The seed of that shift was planted a year before in the summer of 2014. As last September rolled around I found myself in the midst of a major life transition, with my only child going away to college and the next phase of my life beginning to peak through the soil and reach for the sunshine. My whole world started opening up before me. I felt…. scared, nervous, excited, confugled (it’s a word I made up years ago, sort of a blend of confused and mixed up ;), contemplative and full of anticipation to discover how my life will unfold before me in the days/months/years ahead. In October 2015 I began to dive into the beginning of a rebranding process for ‘Laura Aiisha’ while mapping out another plan that would possibly, potentially be the magic key that would allow … Continue reading

My Break Up With Social Media

For the last few years, I’ve done a 3-week cleanse at this time of year. It gives me pause on all of my normal behaviors as far as food and other indulgences go. It’s a challenge, it’s scary, and wow, I feel like a warrioress when I’ve made it through. This fall I’ve decided to hold off on the physical cleanse and focus on a digital cleanse of sorts. I’m putting a pause on all of my projects and choosing to do a social media detox from now through the end of the year. There’s been quite a lot happening in my world over the last few years that I haven’t shared publicly, and in order to give this choice context, I’m going to give you some insight into my inner world. It all started in the fall of 2013, just as I was about to take my first trip to Bali to meet with a group of Femme entrepreneurs to powwow about our businesses and expand our possibilities in the palm of one of the most sacred beautiful places I’ve visited yet. ‘It’ meaning my shadow. My shadow started to come out of hiding and dance with me. Oddly enough … Continue reading

Focus & Contentment ~ My New Huffington Post Blog!

In 2015, I’m choosing to focus on one thing at a time, let go of what’s no longer energizing me, and be more present in the here and the now.  This means embracing the present moment, and focusing on what is truly important and giving energy to my life! I talk about this in my latest blog for the Huffington Post entitled “Focus, Contentment, and How I’m Choosing to Be Here Now.” Letting go and learning to focus on one thing at a time can be a challenging, life-long journey. Believe me, I know this first hand, and I trust sharing my experiences will empower you to share yours. Do you struggle with focus or contentment?  Has something specific helped you remain present and “in the moment?” I would love to hear your thoughts! Share them in the comments section below. And if you missed them, here are my past Huffington Post blogs where I talk about kicking resistance in the ass and finding the power to keep going in 2014. Give thanks for all of your support and for sharing this amazing journey with me! I look forward to reading and responding to your comments 🙂 Blessings, … Continue reading

Focus, Contentment and How I’m Choosing to Be Here Now

I’ve had this reminder in my calendar since doing Marie Forleo’s B School a few years ago. It pops up on Saturday mornings and reminds me to let go of what’s no longer feeling juicy. I see this reminder often, but usually ignore it or skirt over it saying to myself, ‘What’s not feeling juicy?! I can’t even think about that right now,’ or ‘Everything in my life is feeling juicy!’ When I think of this I chuckle and hear a little… ‘yea right’ in my heart. Here’s the thing. I’ve been an overachiever all my life. Always trying to be the best, always trying to do several things at once partly because I’m super crazy creative and have so many ideas and so much energy channeling through me, and partly because I’m trying to ‘get somewhere.’ Always thinking of the end result, and unwilling or unable to be fully content with the present. This is not news to me. My first life coach Julie Cramer used to say to me 8 years ago, ‘What would it be like to just be content with where you are? No striving for something better or to be better?! This message has stuck … Continue reading

Exhale the old and inhale the NEW with The Get Up Movement!

I’m curious… Are you in your YES or in your NO?! Or somewhere in between? Aside from being, by far, one of the most POWERFUL years I’ve had yet (not always easy, not always pretty, definitely far from comfortable 70% of the time), woweeeeeWOW… 2014 has been amazing!! Something that has become crystal clear this year is the difference between standing in my YES or fluctuating between YES & NO, allowing the NO to pull on me stronger than my YES. Is this making sense?! Here’s an example… At the top of the year, literally January 1st, I chose to do my first ever 21 day cleanse. I was all prepared, had a cleansing partner and was raring to go. Even though I was consciously choosing this cleanse, I was NOT in my YES about it!! I whined, complained, and felt sorry for myself because I ‘couldn’t’ have things that bring me comfort, that I enjoy etc. It completely impacted the whole experience for me and made it feel more like a drain as opposed to an uplift. I decided to do the cleanse again on November 1st because I wanted to clean up and clear out before I indulge … Continue reading
