Empowering the next generation of girls – one classroom at a time!

I am so thrilled to be able to share a project with you that has been over a year in the making!

Helping young women step into their power and embrace their unique gifts is a passion and mission of mine! This past school year, my twin sister Sarah and I collaborated on a pilot project with the staff and students of Nativity Miguel’s St. Monica’s Campus to share in a year-long Empowerment and Leadership program with their grade 7 girls.

This project is near and dear to both our hearts as we both keenly remember that vital time in our childhood. 7th grade was the time that I started to veer down a different path and venture into unknown territory, and somewhat unhealthy behavior. I had a hard time relating to my parents, people at school, and sometimes even my twin sister. It was a time when I could have used extra support, guidance, mentorship and a sense that even though I was exploring things that a lot of my peers weren’t exploring, that that was ok, that I was ok.

Sarah and I developed a program to give Saint Monica’s 7th grade girls the tools and space to discover who they are while receiving the support they need to become powerful and empowered young women. We taught mindfulness practices, body-centered awareness, verbalization and communication tools, journal writing, how to express yourself in healthy ways through movement and visual art forms, and several simple, but powerful tools they can carry with them into the world as they claim their power and chart their own journey and path!

We also worked with the 7th Grade girls’ teachers during a handful of workshops throughout the school year so that the work that we were doing with the girls could be experienced by the teachers themselves. It was a powerful year for all of us! And truly amazing to watch the girls and teachers open up and transform before our eyes.

Here is a short piece about our work with the 7th Grade girls and Teachers at Saint Monica’s. Sarah and I continue exploring different ways of bringing this to more schools and classrooms around the country and the world! If you are touched or inspired, please leave a comment and share this blog 🙂

Sarah and I work with both adult and youth. For more info on how to bring Sarah and I to your school, community center, or organization, please contact Sarah Haykel at sarah@sarahhaykel.com

Give thanks!!

Ever Wonder What It’s Like To Be A Twin?

Ever wonder what it’s like being a twin? Sarah and I are asked this question constantly, as people reply, “I always wanted to be a twin!” Here’s your chance to find out. As you probably know, I’m a twin. And not only that, my twin sistar Sarah and I are born during the astrological sign of Gemini, the Twins! Kinda cool, right?! Growing up with a twin sister has been incredibly amazing and also super challenging on many levels. Sarah and I have been going through a powerful transformational time over the last few years, reviewing our past, the old patterns and behaviors that come up between us, and choosing to learn new ways of being in this world in relationship to each other and ourselves. It’s been quite a ride to say the least! When an opportunity presented itself to collaborate with internationally renowned artist Ben Perrone utilizing his ‘Mirror Room’ to visually express our connection and life journey, we jumped on it in an excited effort to showcase a piece that represents a small, but powerfully intriguing view into what it’s like to be a twin. For twins that look alike, there is a constant, on-going comparison that … Continue reading

Drowning in boring? Get ready to Ignite… your love life!

Every day is an opportunity to love and be loved, however there is something that feels extra special about February. Not only is it the shortest month in all the year (and a leap year this year.. how cool!!), but it also means that spring is ever closer to warming our souls and uplifting our senses with the rebirth of everything (at least in the northern hemisphere)! Can I get a Woo Woo?!! Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with two powerhouse execs in Buffalo, NY, who have a podcast for women, by women. Julia and Anne are a frickin’ hoot and I was thrilled to sit down with them for their Valentine’s day episode and get jiggy talking about relational intimacy on the Snyder on Call Podcast! Click here to check out their Facebook page and share your support! I’m passionate and curious about the variety of intimate relationships that exist in our world, what makes them wax and wane or last through the ages, and was thrilled to receive an invitation to dive into the topic on how to “reignite” love and intimacy in long-term romantic partnerships with Julia and Anne. What a timely topic in this season … Continue reading

Exhale the old and inhale the NEW with The Get Up Movement!

I’m curious… Are you in your YES or in your NO?! Or somewhere in between? Aside from being, by far, one of the most POWERFUL years I’ve had yet (not always easy, not always pretty, definitely far from comfortable 70% of the time), woweeeeeWOW… 2014 has been amazing!! Something that has become crystal clear this year is the difference between standing in my YES or fluctuating between YES & NO, allowing the NO to pull on me stronger than my YES. Is this making sense?! Here’s an example… At the top of the year, literally January 1st, I chose to do my first ever 21 day cleanse. I was all prepared, had a cleansing partner and was raring to go. Even though I was consciously choosing this cleanse, I was NOT in my YES about it!! I whined, complained, and felt sorry for myself because I ‘couldn’t’ have things that bring me comfort, that I enjoy etc. It completely impacted the whole experience for me and made it feel more like a drain as opposed to an uplift. I decided to do the cleanse again on November 1st because I wanted to clean up and clear out before I indulge … Continue reading

13 FREE Ways to Ignite Your Inspiration & Get Motivated to Create Your Dream Life Now!

As you probably know, thankfulness is a foundational element in my life and experience. It’s one of the main energies/tools that I use to remind me of life’s abundant blessings and innate goodness. To follow up on my previous blog, I’m thinking about that man.. that heartbreak.. all of the crazy things and the crazy ways that he and I showed up in the face of it all. And I’m also thinking about gratitude. How I was able to move into a place of total forgiveness towards him and myself for the choices we made and the ways we behaved. It took a while to get there; however, when I was able to see this heartbreaking soul-cracking experience from a place of ‘GIVE THANKS’, my entire world and being shifted. I’ve found through the last 8 years, ever since the beginning of my ‘next level healing journey,’ that flipping the script, dispelling the myth and GIVING THANKS for life’s challenges and struggles have given me direct access to more of life’s triumphs, more joy, more energy and living from my power! Now, don’t get me wrong… there are times I get FOOLED and caught up in what I call an … Continue reading

Join us TODAY! The Get Up Movement :: From Woe is Me to Empowered and Free

Bless Up ma famille! I want to share with you a bit about my experience hitting ‘rock bottom.’ When I look back on my life, there are a few specific times that I can think of when I truly hit bottom. And when you hit that place, you know you’re at the bottom because literally, there’s nowhere to go but up. Can you relate?! The last major bottom I hit was at 29 years young. I fell in love with this man who was not ready, willing or able to love me fully. There were several reasons why this didn’t work (and ended in utter disaster); however, what occurred to me in the aftermath was that I had no idea at that time how to love MYSELF. I also realized that I was putting so much of my own ‘stuff’ on this situation, trying to get my needs met through other people who were saying know, but I couldn’t/wouldn’t hear it. It was heartbreaking, it brought me to my knees and broke me to the core.. and then the most incredible things started to happen. I took a STAND for myself and my life. I told myself, ‘Laura Haykel.. you’re … Continue reading

I invite you to check out the interview HERE: How do you get out of your own way? Your feedback is soo welcome, so leave a comment below to let me know how this interview impacted … Continue reading

An awesome review of my CD release party from graphic artist Afura Fareed

Oh my goddess! I’m so thankful for the awesome feedback about my CD and my CD Release Party. The latest review comes through from my girl Afura Fareed, the graphic designer who has created such magic with my latest projects! She captures the party’s vibe in such a beautiful way… Read on to get even more of the flavor of this oh-so-MEMORABLE evening! ‘Laura Aiisha’s release party for her debut album “I Am” left little to be desired. It was the first EP launch I’d ever been to, and I’m confident that other guests in the same position would agree that it was everything they’d imagined and then some. The 9th Ward as her choice of venue was perfect. Its old-world-meets-modern-artsy vibe was welcoming and provided a cozy, intimate setting for such a gathering. As the event photographer, I was excited to arrive early and be one of the first guests to receive a free copy of the CD, and to soak up the positive atmosphere on camera before and during the event. Laura has been a good friend and colleague of mine for a while now, but until her album release party, I hadn’t had the pleasure of seeing … Continue reading
